What to pack:
March weather typically ranges from 49-57 degrees with 12 days of rain (though it can rain for short periods on any given day). We will be staying in a converted stone monastery that lacks central heating. Layers of comfortable clothing will be perfect, with comfortable, thin base layers and at least one fleece top or sweater and a medium- or light-weight water-resistant jacket with a hood and/or a rain hat (and warm scarf gloves if you tend to be chilly). I recommend planning to bring 2-3 pair of synthetic fiber or wool leggings or pants that are comfortable for yin yoga as well as for hiking, as well as several pair of wool or synthetic fiber socks. Bring a comfortable pair of athletic shoes for hiking over tree roots, in mud and on gravel (no need to bring a robust boot-type hiker unless your feet prefer it, a running-type shoe is adequate for conditions--I usually hike in "barefoot-style" shoes) and a comfortable pair of non-slip casual shoes or boots (heels are not recommended nor needed!) If you plan to take a dip in the hot springs, please bring (an old) dark-colored bathing suit and flip flops or similar shoes. You may want to bring one dressy outfit and a pair of non-athletic pants that you would wear on the plane. If you are not checking luggage, you are allowed one personal item and one carry-on bag, though sizes vary by air carrier (TAP airlines' checked and carry-on baggage requirements are here.)
You might enjoy having the following for your travels and while on retreat:
Refillable water bottle, USB charging cord, blackout eye mask, earplugs or noise cancelling headphones, a book, journal, power plug adaptor like this or these (no convertor is needed for most cell phones or laptops which are designed to be dual voltage), sunglasses, sunscreen, bars or similar snacks. A US-type charging plug and COVID-style facemask(s) may be helpful while flying (but pillows and blankets and plug-in headphones are ordinarily provided on overseas flights, as are meals.)
Portugal is rather casual but I recommend packing one dressier outfit to wear on an evening out. If planning to pack a carry-on only, please be sure your liquids fit into a smaller transparent bag. There are multiple grocery stores and pharmacies within walking distance for anything you might need or have forgotten.
A comfortable practice space will be provided, including mats and blankets and props.
Travel Tip: The body can typically time-adjust about an hour per day. Try going to bed and waking an hour earlier each day for the few days prior to your trip and you will shave a few days' jetlag off before you start!
Check back here periodically and before you depart for further information...
